What is a Mechanical Keyboard

What Is a Mechanical Keyboard?
A mechanical keyboard uses individual switches under each key. When you press a key, the switch physically actuates to complete a circuit.
This is different from a membrane keyboard, which uses a rubber dome that collapses to make contact directly with the PCB.

Mechanical vs Membrane
Mechanical keyboards
  • Individual switches under each key
  • More consistent feel
  • Longer lifespan
  • Fully customizable
Membrane keyboards
  • Rubber dome sheet across the board
  • Softer, less defined feel
  • Typically cheaper
  • Not really customizable

Why Do People Care?
It mostly comes down to feel and control.
With mechanical keyboards, every keypress is intentional and consistent. You can also customize nearly every part of the keyboard, from how it sounds to how it feels to type on.
For a lot of people, it starts as “this feels better” and turns into a hobby from there.

There’s More to It
Once you start digging in, you’ll run into things like:
  • keycap sizes
  • different profiles
  • materials and manufacturing methods
  • groupbuys, preorders, and limited releases
It can get confusing fast, which is why we’re breaking it down.
