Keycap Profiles Explained: CYL/Cherry, SA, MTNU (Typing Feel Guide)

Keycap Profiles (How They Feel)

Keycap profiles describe the shape of the keycaps and how they feel when typing.
This has a bigger impact than most people expect.

Sculpted vs Uniform

Sculpted profiles
Each row has a different height and angle to match natural finger movement.

You’ll sometimes see this written as something like: 1-2-3-4-4

Common examples: CYL (commonly known as Cherry) and SA.

Uniform profiles
Every row is the same height and angle, creating a flat typing surface.

An increasingly common example: MTNU.

Cylindrical vs Spherical
This describes the shape of the top surface.
Cylindrical
  • Slight curve side-to-side
  • Feels familiar and controlled
  • Example: CYL/Cherry profile
Spherical
  • Deeper, bowl-like shape
  • More pronounced feel
  • Example: MTNU and SA profile

Why It Matters
Profile affects:
  • typing comfort
  • accuracy
  • overall feel
There’s no “best” option. It’s all preference.
